Should you rent a car in Wellington?
Decide based on trip shape, not by default.
- City-center stays rarely need a car
- Day trips can change the equation
- Parking and traffic matter more than rental price
Do not rent a car for Wellington itself.
If your trip is mostly urban, walk central wellington as much as possible, then use buses or short rides only for hill or outer-neighborhood jumps. wellington works best in compact loops. pair the waterfront, te aro, and central museum logic, then give hill or coastal additions their own smaller block.
Renting becomes more interesting when you add countryside routes, beaches outside the center, or multi-stop regional loops.
