Should you rent a car in Sapporo?
Decide based on trip shape, not by default.
- City-center stays rarely need a car
- Day trips can change the equation
- Parking and traffic matter more than rental price
Do not rent a car for Sapporo itself unless the trip immediately becomes a wider Hokkaido drive.
If your trip is mostly urban, use the subway for longer jumps, then walk the central grid, odori, susukino, and market areas once you arrive. keep odori and central landmarks together, keep nijo or beer-history logic together, and let susukino own the evening. the city feels larger only when you scatter it unnecessarily.
Renting becomes more interesting when you add countryside routes, beaches outside the center, or multi-stop regional loops.
